Quarantine books and music! [druid tips] Books The good Creole (Adolfo Caminha) The importance of the work o Bom Crioulo, published in 1895, by Adolfo Caminha, is in its theme. According to literary critics, this was the first novel involving homosexuality released in the entire history of literature produced in the West. good Creole like any work that breaks with the paradigms of its time, Bom Crioulo was received by audiences and critics silently. This was due to the presence of bold themes such as homosexuality among the military and sex between people of different ethnicities, themes that were taboo at the end of the 19th century. In the story of Bom Crioulo, the protagonist is Amaro, a slave who has the objective of guiding his destiny after successfully escaping from his Lord. He becomes a sailor and thus manages to be free. He is described by Adolfo Caminha as a man of muscular stature, stronger than the other sailors, benevolent and willful. For these adjectives, it is called "Bom Crioulo". Having gone through explorations on the farms where he worked, the former slave can easily adapt to the discipline required by the Navy. However, Bom Crioulo ends up falling in love with Aleixo, a blond with clear eyes who was a young sailor new to the armada. This completely changes Amaro's relationship with his superiors, the sailor begins to drink, fight and defend the man he loves, receiving punishment for misconduct. Aleixo, on the other hand, does not seem to love Amaro in reciprocity, showing only a feeling of gratitude. After arriving in Rio de Janeiro, Amaro gets a room to share with Aleixo in a pension coordinated by a former prostitute, D. Carolina, who had been saved from an assault due to the intervention of Bom Crioulo. The two begin to live in a matrimonial way, but due to the rigidity of the captain of the Amaro vessel, which allows him only one break a month, the lovers end up seeing very little and get away. At this moment, young Aleixo lets himself be seduced by D. Carolina, falling in love with her. * Worth reading! Amazing ending! Demian (Hermann Hesse) PLOT After inventing the first lie that will introduce him to the dark world, Emil Sinclair is tormented by the duality of the universe; stuck between the ideal world (associated with the immaculate teachings of the family) and this other world, outside the parents' residence, with strange values, where everything seems to happen. “The life of every human being is a path towards oneself, an attempt at a path, the following of a simple trail.” Page 20 Sinclair The book will tell the story of Sinclair, who, upon meeting Max Demian during childhood, finds himself in a world totally different from that preached by his parents. The relationship between the two, as the title suggests, runs through the entire narrative. It is in this incessant search, surrounded by dichotomy, that Sinclair will confront his own conceptions in order to find the true personality. This, after phases of rebellion and self-acceptance, leads to introspection. “For the first time I savored death. It tasted bitter. For death is birth, it is anguish and fear in the face of a terrifying renewal. ” Page 35 Sinclair Originally published in 1919, the story takes place before the 1st world war (1914-1918) and narrates mainly the internal conflicts that an individual goes through from childhood, through adolescence, until his adult age. Thus, Demian is a training novel, both for the reader and the protagonist. * there is a duality in the text that talks about the theme of homosexuality due to the sexual tension between the characters! Music Madonna - Ray the Light * My favorite album from the Queen of pop music Channeling acid electronica, Kabbalah, and motherhood, Madonna’s 1998 reinvention stripped away the controversy of her past and became one of her most unexpectedly successful albums. Madonna had recently taken voice lessons for her role in the musical Evita and, as she put it about her work prior to improving her technique, “There was a whole piece of my voice I wasn’t using. And I was going to make the most of it. ” Her newly trained voice explodes out of the speakers on the title track, the character of her upper register suddenly like crystal. Though “Ray of Light” is “a mystical look at the universe and how small we are,” Namaste!
