Homosexuality and sexual synergy
Homosexuality [note 1] (from the ancient Greek ὁμός (homos), equal + Latin sexus = sex) refers to the characteristic, condition or quality of a being (human or not) who feels physical, aesthetic and / or emotional attraction to another be of the same sex or gender. As a sexual orientation, homosexuality refers to "a lasting pattern of sexual, affective and romantic experiences" mainly or exclusively among people of the same sex; "it also refers to an individual with a sense of personal and social identity based on these attractions, manifesting behaviors and joining a community of people who share the same sexual orientation."
Why are gays gay?
Science is getting closer to explaining one of the greatest mysteries of human behavior.
Text Eduardo Szklarz
After-hours bar, cold beer, lively chat about co-workers. Suddenly, someone makes the bombastic revelation: “Do you know the guy? Is gay!" You have probably participated in a conversation like this. It happens every day, in the best bars and also in the best families. After the silence, the table is divided between those completely surprised and those "who were always sure, it was in the face that he was". Until someone finally asks, “But why? What made so-and-so different from most? ” And the round of speculation begins: "It is the fault of the repressive mother." "He was raped by his father." "I didn't like football." “It's genetic, since I was a little girl, I used to have effeminate ways.” "He's only gay because he's in fashion."
Many people believe that science should put this controversy aside. The argument is that gays exist and that's it - there's nothing else to understand. For them, asking about what makes a person gay is a prejudiced attitude that assumes that heterosexuality needs no explanation. Scientists, however, defend the need for research, arguing that it can end - or at least diminish - prejudices. “Homosexuals are often accused of exhibiting unnatural behavior. The only way to refute this accusation is to research the causes of different sexual orientations, "says transsexual biologist Joan Roughgard, a professor at Stanford University and author of the book Evolution's Rainbow (" Rainbow of Evolution ", without translation in Portuguese), in which analyzes about 300 cases of homosexual behavior among animals. For anthropologist Luiz Mott, president of the Gay Group of Bahia, research is important because it deconstructs the ancient religious notion that homosexuality is diabolical and pathological behavior. "If they prove that there is a genetic root, it will be clear that homosexuality is in the Creator's own designs," he says.
Another pro-research argument says that knowing the origin of your own behavior alleviates anxiety a little. “We see the concern of homosexuals not to be discriminated against, but also that of parents, who feel responsible and want to understand the extent to which this feeling proceeds,” says Carmita Abdo, a psychiatrist at Hospital das Clínicas in São Paulo and coordinator of the Sexuality project, largest research ever done on the sexual habits of Brazilians.
Attempts to explain the origin of homosexuality include theories ranging from mythology to sociology. In the 19th century, psychiatrists concluded that being gay was a mental disorder caused by misunderstandings in child rearing - and that idea reigned in most of the 20th century. But if this theory was correct, then it would be possible to avoid and even reverse homosexual conditions. In realizing the total failure of "cure" therapies in 1973, the American Psychiatric Association thought it best to remove same-sex sexual attraction from its list of mental disorders. That was when the term changed its name: homosexuality gave way to homosexuality - because the suffix “ism” denotes disease. At this point, scientists already considered being an absolutely natural variation of human behavior to be gay.
In the Wiccan religion homosexuality is not considered a disorder or is accused as it is in several other religions. Religion preaches that you can do what is best for you, without interfering with the rights of others.
As Hugh Urban (2004) argues, speeches and practices such as Tantra and sexual magic aim to release sex from its bonds and taboos, a theme that constitutes an obsession for modern Western society.
In the twentieth century, the counterculture took over and problematized the issue of sexuality again, this time considering it intertwined with social issues such as the liberation of women and civil rights for homosexuals.
